One of the historical places of Izmir, Asansör Tower has been built in the year 1907 by a Jewish philanthropist; Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu to render the difficulty fort he elders, children and pregnant woman to climb the stairs due to the altitude difference between Mithatpaşa Street and Halil Rıfat Quarter. The Tower also had named a part of Karataş Quarter and caused tramway stop to be named Asansör. The bricks of the Tower had been brought from Marseilles which was then run through manual vapor engine. The tower had belonged to Nesim Levi for years, then to Ayla Ökmen and in 1983, the Tower was donated to Izmir Metropolitan Municipality by Mrs. Ökmen. Historical Asansör has been restored by the architects Zehra Ekinci and Oktay Ekinci on behalf of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and was then reunited with the city. The street to Asansör facilities which had started service in 1992, from the direction of Mithatpaşa Street was named after Dario Moreno because he had lived in that Street.
