- History of Galata Bridge
Whose old name was Cisr-i Cedid (New Bridge) has been constructed by timbers in 1845 by Valide Sultan mother of Abdulmecid the 1st. The bridge has been renewed and recommissioned again by Kaptan-ı Derya Hasan Ahmed Pasha in 1863 since it grew old in short period of time. The bridge reconstructed again by Sultan Abdulaziz in 1875.
The 4th bridge has been constructed by the German company in 1912 by command of Sultan Mehmed Reşad the 5th. A new bridge started to be built in 1987 at the Golden Horn side of the bridge. Before it has completed, this bridge damaged by fire in 1992 and other bridge put into service after a fire in 1992.
5th Galata Bridge is a bascule bridge with 490 meters length, 42 meters width and 80 meters extensible parts. 42 restaurants and cafes based under the bridge.
